Benefits of Fluoride

Our practice supports the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's (AAPD) position that fluoride is a safe and effective tool in reducing the risk of caries/cavities and reversing enamel demineralization/breakdown (the start of caries/cavities).

There are three sources of fluoride recommended that your child receive:

1. Ingested fluoride through a water source or prescribed supplement

2. Fluoridated toothpaste used twice daily at home. Your pediatric dentist will make an individual recommendation to you on when it is appropriate for your child to begin to use fluoridated toothpaste and the appropriate amount to use

3. Topical application of fluoride by your pediatric dentist

It is reported by the AAPD that the long-term use of fluoride has reduced the cost of oral health care for children by as much as 50%. Fluoride use combined with a healthy diet, good oral homecare and regular six month visits to your pediatric dentist are encouraged for your child's optimal oral health.
